AMAZON IS NOT A GOOD NEIGHBOUR.
Seattle and Silicon Valley are good places to observe the drastic consequences of tech corporations for the cities: Rents, homelessness and income disparities are skyrocketing. The Amazon corporation threatens to exacerbate the already tense situation in Berlin. Housing and social facilities are affected as as well as cultural spaces and small businesses. But the problem of Amazon goes far beyond our neighbourhood:
AMAZON STANDS FOR
DISPLACEMENT, EXPLOITATION, SURVEILLANCE,
MONOPOLISATION, TAX EVASION, …
The levels of criticism of the Corporation’s practices are many and varied. Sometimes very concrete in the case of poor working conditions, sometimes barely tangible like the (destructive) power of algorithms. It is often hard to believe the audacity with which the Amazon boss and richest person in the world, Jeff Bezos, drives profit maximization. Within 25 years Amazon has gone from being a bookseller to a societal problem.
FIGHT THE TOWER!
At the same time employees in Germany, USA, France are successfully fighting for more labour rights against the Amazon corporation. And the retreat of Amazon in New York City and of Google in Kreuzberg shows that we are not left at the mercy of being ousted by tech corporations. With a broad organization we can successfully fight against the destruction of our neighborhoods!
